If you've experienced trauma, you know how it can continue to affect your daily life long after the event has passed. Disturbing memories, intense emotions, nightmares, or feeling "stuck" are common responses that can impact your relationships, work, and overall wellbeing. EMDR therapy offers a proven path toward healing.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized, evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional intensity and allows natural healing to occur.
What EMDR can help with:
Trauma and PTSD - Processing single incidents or complex trauma that continues to impact your life
Medical Trauma - Addressing distressing experiences related to medical procedures, hospitalizations, or health diagnoses
Vicarious Trauma - Healing from trauma exposure through your work or witnessing others' traumatic experiences
Anxiety and Panic - Addressing anxiety that stems from past experiences or traumatic events
Disturbing Memories - Reducing the emotional charge of memories that feel overwhelming or intrusive
Negative Self-Beliefs - Transforming beliefs like "I'm not safe" or "I'm powerless" that developed from difficult experiences
Sleep Difficulties - Addressing nightmares and sleep disruption related to trauma
Emotional Overwhelm - Learning to manage intense emotions that feel uncontrollable
How EMDR works:
During EMDR sessions, you'll recall specific memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation (typically following a light bar with your eyes). This process helps your brain reprocess the traumatic material, allowing it to be stored in a way that no longer triggers intense emotional or physical reactions.
EMDR is different from traditional talk therapy—while we'll discuss your experiences, the focus is on allowing your brain's natural healing capacity to process the trauma. Many clients find EMDR helpful when other therapies haven't provided the relief they were seeking.
What to expect:
EMDR therapy typically involves several phases, beginning with preparation and building coping skills before processing traumatic memories. We'll work at your pace, ensuring you feel safe and supported throughout the process.
EMDR sessions are available in-person at our Calgary office or through secure online appointments. While in-person sessions are often preferred for EMDR work, online sessions can be effective when in-person meetings aren't possible.
You don't have to let past experiences continue to control your present. EMDR therapy can help you process what happened so you can move forward with greater peace and freedom.
